I am currently working on a paper entitled: Computer-Aided Argument Mapping and the Teaching of Critical Thinking for the journal Inquiry.
I am also working on a book: Critical Thinking in Higher Education to be edited with Emeritus Professors Ron Barnett (London) and Bob Ennis (Illinois).
Dr. Davies:
Years ago I came across the Australian 3-man debate format and used it in my high school classrooms. I have loaned it to a colleague who has misplaced it. Online, I found the pdf “helpsheet Effective Debating” and found the title of your book, but can not find the rules, definition of the moot, or the score sheet. Could you direct me to them or would you email copies of them to me?
I want to have students debate the slave issue based on their reading of Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
If you could help me, I would appreciate it.

Hi Judy
Sorry for the delay. I don’t check my site as often as I should! If you look up “formal debate rules scoresheet” on Google, there is quite a good one available as aa download from someone in Malaysia; iium.edu.au
Dear Dr. Davies,
I am unsure if you will recall me from Federation University, when Federation Uni was first taking over the Monash campus in Churchill. However, I remember the assistance you gave me during the first semester of studying my Bachelor degree in Psychological Sciences. I feel a need to thank you for all you instilled in me during writing assistance sessions and basic structures of academic writing during orientation, as I have successfully completed my degree with distinctions and even better than that, I have learned the art of critical thinking. I will always remember you as Doc Martin (don’t ask me why?) and as the person who assisted me in believing in what I had to offer the world. Once again thank you for your guidance during my formative academic development.
Kind Regards
Belinda Briggs
That’s very pleasing to hear Belinda. How very thoughtful of you to take the time to write. I hope all is well for you in these crazy times! All the best, Martin
