1st. marriage to Harriet Ann Barker on 11th June 1864. She was born in ? and died in Wisbech 1872. They had four children, three of whom became journalists:

William Charles Barker Cowen (b1866) Cockermouth
John Richard Cowen (jnr) (b1867) Sculcoates
Thomas Clark Cowen (b1869) in Sculcoates.
Mary Elizabeth (b1871) in Sculcoates.

(2nd wife ) to Louisa Catherine Lockey (born in Hull 1842. D.1887 age 45). They had one child:

Mary Louisa Jane born in Leeds. Married 1900. Died Sydney 1880.

(3rd) to Henrietta Emeric (widow with son(?) and daughter Rose who married a Hazelfoot). Henrietta died in Wandsworth in 1913.
