John Richard married a second time to Louisa Catherine Lockey (b1842- d1887 in Hull)

John Richard went to Shanghai, China where he established to first English newspaper in that city. After Shanghai, he was associated with the then Chronicle newspaper in Kobe, Japan.

While in the Far East he married in 1891 for the third time a French widow Henrietta Emeric with two sons (or one son and daughter Rose, who married someone named Hazelfoot). Marriage held at Wandsworth. (Henrietta died at Wandsworth in 1913)

John Richard was on the staff of the Yorkshire Evening Press in 1892

John Richard Cowen, the eldest son of John Cowen, the Baker, was born in Hull in 1839 or 1840. He was listed in the 1867 Hull Directory as a Journalist living a 3 Vane Street, Hull. He married the daughter of a local businessman. Later he went to Shanghai, China, where he established the first English Newspaper in that city. After being in Shanghai, he was associated with the then Chronicle newspaper in Kobe Japan. While in the Far East he married a French widow with two sons.
