Misc. Notes

By David Lauder

William John Darvell was born 23rd December 1864 (calculated from marriage certificate). He married Emily Polglase on the 23rd September 1884, with Salvation Army rites in Melbourne.

He is shown as being 19 years of age and a plumber from Prahran. It is worth noting that the Salvation Army had only commenced operations in Melbourne less than two years prior, and that the officiating Minister, Rev. John Fenwick Horsley, was second-in-command of the Melbourne Temple.

Emily was from Sandhurst (Bendigo) and was the daughter of Benjamin Polglase (Mining Manager) and Emily Colenso, who had married in Penzance, Cornwall, about 1851 and emigrated to Australia around 1854. [42]

—William John (approx. b1884 in Zeehan, Tasmania)
—Violet Ethel Maud (b 28th June 1885 in Melbourne)
—Margaretta (b1888 in Tasmania) [43]

The girls both died very young in Melbourne. Violet died of marasmus at three months of age, whilst Margaretta died from gastroenteritis and exhaustion at five months of age.

William John Darvell died on the 17th May 1916 after hitting his head falling from a horse-drawn cart. [44] He was buried in the same plot as his father, Thomas Collins Darvell, and grandfather, Phillip Darvell in the St. Kilda Cemetery, albeit in different years; viz., WJ (17-05-1916), TC (5-9-1887), P (12-3-1868).
